The Tradition of a Flower Girl

Historically, the traditional duty of a chosen Flower Girl was to scatter fresh flowers along the pathway before a bride to ensure that her life would be a "rosy" one.
Today that tradition has evolved due to issues with staining and mess to the point where seldom any flowers are actually scattered. More often than not, the flowers remain in a small basket or bouquet that the child walks up the aisle with. A new twist on this practice today is to do away with the flowers all together.
For those having a garden or spring/summer wedding a small galvanized watering can, decorated with a large single gerber daisy and flirty pretty ribbon streamers can not only look pretty, but carries the added play value that can keep your Flower girl distracted for the entirety of the ceremony. It can also be a wonderful favor or keepsake that you give to the child that she can keep and use at home to help her own garden grow.
If the wedding is to be a religious one, you can also have your Flower Girl walk down the aisle clutching a small white bible, a candle, or a bell that she can ring (though that can make for a noisy ceremony later on).
Depending upon the age of the child, they can also carry a small satin purse covered in silk or satin flowers or a small satin stuffed animal. Considering the purse can contain some small toys they can amuse themselves with and the stuffed animal is a toy itself, you wouldn't have to worry about them being bored further into the ceremony.
While scattering flowers may no longer be a part of the Flower Girl Tradition, having a little girl you know and love stand alongside you in a special role as your Flower Girl, is a tradition that will never die. Look beyond flowers to something that will make your little attendant feel that she is a special part of your day - even if it means she is a flowerless Flower Girl.
